My good friend Chuck Hersh invited me to shoot some fitness models at the Busy Body Fitness Center in Boca Raton. This was shot using 4 Alien Bees (2x B1600, 2x B800). The main light was in a large octabox.

Aerobic exercise covers any activity which raises a person’s metabolism. For many people who take part in aerobics, their primary motivation is to improve their appearance through weight loss and better muscle tone. But aerobic exercise is also extremely beneficial to a person’s health, making it something which everyone should incorporate into their routine several times a week.
Regular aerobic exercise helps strengthen the respiratory muscles. In doing this, a person can increase their lung capacity which will improve their stamina when exercising and should make them feel healthier and more energised. Aerobics can also strengthen the heart muscle which will enhance its ability to effectively pump blood around the body and will reduce a person’s resting heart rate. This is especially beneficial for people who have been diagnosed with hypertension or who suffer from stress, which can trigger high blood pressure.
Improving the circulation system through aerobic exercise will help the body use oxygen more effectively. The reason for this is cardiovascular exercise increases the number of red blood cells, which facilitate the transportation of oxygen throughout the body.
Doing regular aerobics increases the rate in which your body burns calories which, along with a balanced diet, will help either maintain a healthy weight or shed excess pounds. This increase in metabolism will last for several hours after the aerobic work out. A healthy body mass index can significantly reduce a person’s risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, as well as serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease. Aerobic exercise is of particular benefit to women, who are generally at more risk of problems such as osteoporosis, as high impact activities such as jogging can increase bone density.
Aerobic exercise can boost your mental health as well as your physical health, as exercise affects the level of certain hormones in the body. For instance, when exercising the endocrine system is stimulated to emit endorphins that elevate the mood or produce chemicals which lower cholesterol. The mood enhancing effects of aerobic exercise means that it is a particularly beneficial activity to people undergoing a period of stress, or who may be suffering from clinical depression.
Doing aerobics will also improve your lymphatic flow. The lymphatic system is responsible extremely important in defending the body against toxins and disease. In combination with the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise on hormone secretion, this can lead to greater immunity against illness.
If you have previously led a fairly inactive lifestyle the idea of incorporating aerobic exercise into your life may be quite intimidating. However, if you start small, for instance starting off with 10 minute sessions, you will find it soon becomes much easier as your strength and stamina increases, and you start to experience the health benefits of a regular aerobic work out.… Read More

In the United States at least one child in five is overweight and the number continues to grow each day. Over the past two decades, the number of children who are overweight, as well as the number of grossly obese children has more than doubled. And no, children do not out grow it. Overweight children are at a higher risk of becoming unhealthy adolescents and adults. And, it’s overweight adults who are most at risk for a number of problems including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and all forms of cancer. Overweight in children and adolescents is generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of the two, with genetics and lifestyle both playing important determining roles. Children whose family members are overweight are also at an increased risk of becoming overweight, although not all children with an obese family will become overweight. However, it is more likely then not, shared family behaviors such as bad eating habits and lack of activity will have an impact on a child’s body weight.
Our society has become very sedentary with television, computer and video games contributing to children’s inactive lifestyles. Children are spending less time playing outdoors and more time watching TV or sitting in front of their computers, and as a result, they’re getting heavier. In fact 43% of adolescents watch more than 2 hours of television each day, and only half of U.S. children get as much exercise as they need. As a result, children are displaying signs of heart disease and diabetes before they even reach their teens.
The good news is that almost any kind of physical activity can help prevent the rising tide of obesity. In addition, studies have found that physically active children are far less susceptible to emotional problems, are more likely to stay away from drugs, resist smoking cigarettes, delay sexual activity; develop more self-confidence and higher self-esteem, and even get better grades.
In addition to competitive and recreational sports, weight training has become increasingly popular as an effective method of exercise for preadolescents and adolescents. From Hercules to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the image of the muscular hero has inspired children for generations. And now, perhaps more than ever, physical education experts are encouraging kids to hit the weights. The benefits of weight training in the preadolescent and adolescent population outweigh any possible risks. Improved muscular strength, endurance and flexibility; prevention of bone loss and osteoporosis; improved self-image, confidence and well-being; improved motor coordination and sports performance; decreased risk of injury; lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels; weight maintenance; neuromuscular therapy and physical rehabilitation; improved aerobic capacity; and the promotion of a lifelong lifestyle of physical activity can all be attributed to weight training.
Weight training also offers particular advantages to children who are overweight and struggle to keep up with their peers in more traditional sports. By lifting weights, children can improve their strength, endurance and coordination, enhancing their performance in other sports. And, when they lift … Read More

Weight loss is a condition that many horse owners have had to deal with at one time or another. A horse that appears thin may be suffering from weight loss due to a number of causes. However there are three common causes of weight loss in horses: malnutrition, parasitism and dental disease.
If a horse is suffering from malnutrition then the number of calories it is consuming is less than the number it is using, it may also suffer from an incorrectly balanced diet. Causes of this include feeding poor quality feed, supplying inadequate amounts of feed or the horse maybe missing out on feed due to competition at feeding time.
Parasites can rob your horse of much needed nutrition as the parasites consume the nutrients or cause inflammation of the horse’s gut leading to poor absorption of nutrients across the gut wall. A targeted parasite management program involving the use of appropriate dewormers given at the correct dose, combined with pasture management and fecal egg counts should minimise the impact parasites are having on your horses.
Dental problems can decrease your horses FCR or Food Conversion Ratio this is a measure of how efficient your horse is at converting feed into energy. The first two steps in digestion are prehension or picking up the feed and mastication or chewing. Any change in the efficiency of these two steps has a direct effect on the efficiency of the rest of the digestive process, as the rest of the digestive tract is only as efficient as these two steps. In severe cases loose, fractured or infected teeth can cause a horse to stop eating all together.
There are many other causes of weight loss in the horse, however the three covered above are the most common and should always be addressed when assessing a horse for weight loss. Other causes of weight loss can include but are not limited to tumours, disease of major organs such as the kidneys or liver, issues affecting hormone levels, inflammation of the intestine, chronic infection and stomach ulcers.
A useful tool in evaluating and reassessing weight loss in horses in to use a body condition scoring system. There are two main systems used one system grades horses from 1 – 5 with 1 being very poor condition and 5 being obese the other system grades horses from 1-9. The key difference between the two systems is the greater degree of accuracy of the 1-9 system.
Another tool that can help is the use of weight tapes although bear in mind that these are not always very accurate, alternatively if you are lucky you may live in an area where you vet or racetrack have digital scales you can use to weigh your horse more accurately.
While we are discussing weight loss in horses we should also talk about the dangers of a horse being too heavy. The same risks posed to people by being obese apply to our horses as well as a few of … Read More
