Why You Should Ditch the Scale and Love Your Body

It’s Just a Number:

We’ve all been there. Stepping on the scale and holding our breath. Closing our eyes to delay, just for a moment, the number that awaits us. If you’re like me, you’ve tried every trick to make that dastardly old scale behave a little more nicely. You’ve shed shoes, pants, earrings, headbands-you’d take out your fillings if you could!

And that does not even include all of the hard work that preceded this moment: the endless hours of exercise. The gallons upon gallons of water. The near starvation and the gagging down of all these pills, potions, and magic elixirs that promise instant and enduring results. By the time we reach the scale, we’re more likely to feel like crawling than walking-such is what we put ourselves through in the pursuit of the thin and perfect’ body.

But why are we so obsessed with a few measly numbers on a bathroom scale? Why does this one little household item have so much power over us, and how we feel about ourselves? The simple fact is that the number on the bathroom scale reflects very little on our overall physical health. And it says far less about our beauty. Our uniqueness. Our worth as human beings.

So instead of being taunted by the tyranny of the scale, let’s focus on the things that really mean something, the things that really matter. Let’s learn to treat our bodies right and recognize their beauty-at any weight.

Stopping the Scale Obsession:

Anyone who has ever dieted-and that means pretty much anyone who has ever lived in the US in the last 100 years-knows how quickly an obsession with the scale can develop. Those first few lost pounds are like a drug. They intoxicate. They infuse you with a sense of accomplishment. Of triumph.

But that victory is all too often short-lived. Soon the numbers start dropping gradually. Than they stop dropping at all and as the weight loss slows, the obsession with the scale grows. You may find yourself checking multiple times a day-maybe even multiple times an hour.

You will find that your mood and your self-image are increasingly tied to the numbers that greet you on the scale. If the drop has been sufficient, your day is made and your self-esteem grows. If the drop is not what you expected, than you are a failure. You have not worked hard enough. You did not want it enough. You are not good enough.

This is a vicious and tremendously unhealthy cycle, one that often leads not only to emotional overeating in the desperate attempt to gain some kind of solace, but one which also produces stress-and stress, as we know, causes chemicals such as cortisol to be released into the body. These stress chemicals also promote the development-and the retention-of fat, especially fat around the dreaded midsection.

When you become scale-obsessed, you’re basically setting yourself up for failure, for a self-destructive cycle of emotional highs and lows that will almost … Read More

Exercise and Weight Loss

With exercise, if you choose something that you don’t like doing, you’re not likely to keep it up and lose focus. Think about this for a minute, if you don’t like running you’re hardly going to keep forcing yourself out of bed at 7am, particularly during the winter when it’s cold. If you can’t find something you like, just go for the thing you hate the least. This is usually walking.

When I first started eating healthy i struggled with fighting my hunger If you begin to feel hungry, eat something. Just ensure you eat decent healthy foods and don’t eat too much of it. It’s important that you eat enough to satisfy your hunger and balance your blood sugar. Remember you are trying to lose weight, so you’ll only be setting yourself back if you eat junk food.

It doesn’t seem right when you get up and eat breakfast and find yourself even more hungry later in the morning than usual. But eating more in the morning can help cut down hunger later in the day, and evening time is when people are much more likely to over eat. Eating a good healthy breakfast in the morning will set you off on the right foot.

If you can’t afford a gym membership go out and get some cheap exercise equipment or just go do outdoor activities. A really effective way to get trim and burn some calories is by using a hoola hoop. This low cost hoop is something people don’t often think about. Start out by trying to do it for a short while at a time. Then, gradually build up to at least ten minutes total in any one day. You can space it out into two minute sessions with a thirty second break in between.

A really good low cost piece of equipment for toning up is the mini trampoline. This piece of equipment is easy to store and is great for working your entire body. You can have great fun with it whilst getting rid of those calories.… Read More

Cyncoed Fitness Centre

Cardiff Metropolitan University has recently invested over £250,000 in re-developing and refurbishing both the Cyncoed and Llandaff fitness centres during the Summer of 2012.

The fitness centre at Cyncoed has been expanded to cater for a larger free weights training area with a greater provision of equipment, including three Hammer Strength squat racks. The cardio vascular (CV) equipment has been replaced with brand new ‘Life Fitness’ equipment and the CV area has also increased in size.

Nautius And Bowflex

We've all seen Nautilus exercise equipment in the gym, right? Ever wonder what the difference is between those machines and the Bowflex exercise equipment you always see on TV commercials? Which is better?

Nautilus is the parent company for Bowflex. It carries a few types of exercise equipment, in addition to Bowflex. These include the StairMaster, Schwinn and Trimline brands.

Either is really better or worse, they're just different. For starters, most Nautilus strength machines are geared towards commercial (gym) use. Nautilus has a different machine for each body part or group of muscles. This is not practical for use at home. All that equipment would take up way too much space.

Bowflex, on the other hand, is exercise equipment for use in your own home. Bowflex strength products feature two total gym systems. A total gym means that you can perform exercises for all muscle groups with just one piece of exercise equipment.

Although Nautilus does carry a total gym line, another difference is the way each strength machine works. The total gym equipment from Nautilus is based on weight stacks. Bowflex total gyms offer resistance from either rods or Spriraflex technology. Spiraflex is a technology that provides resistance by wrapping elastic bands tighter around a coil.

Both Nautilus and Bowflex brands also carry cardio exercise equipment. Because Bowflex is exercise equipment for home use, Bowflex cardio equipment is priced lower than its Nautilus counterparts.

Bowflex offers basically three types of strength and two lines of cardio exercise equipment. The most basic strength equipment is the SelectTech free weight system. This line features the SelectTech dumbbells. These dumbbells are convenient for home use because one pair can take the place of fifteen sets of weights.

The other two strength lines from the Bowflex brand are total gym lines. They include the Bowflex Home Gyms, with rod-based resistance, and the Bowflex Revolution, featuring Spiraflex technology. Both are popular options for a home-based gym.

Bowflex total gym systems are low inertia resistance machines. This promotes a safer workout than free weights. In addition, a Bowflex machine takes up much less space than the amount of free weights needed to perform the same exercises.

Both the Bowflex Revolution and Bowflex Home Gym systems offer several configurations and models. This makes it easier for you to find a total gym that meets your exact needs.

Another great thing about the Bowflex total gym systems is that they come with a six-week money back guarantee. If you are unhappy after working out with your machine for up to six weeks, Bowflex will refund the purchase price of your exercise equipment less the shipping and handling costs. This is definitely one of the best guarantees in the fitness world.

If you're looking for a piece of cardio exercise equipment for your home, Bowflex offers both treadmills and TreadClimbers. The TreadClimber is a unique combination of a step machine and a treadmill. You step both forward, like on a treadmill, and up, like on a step … Read More
