The last thing that you want if you are looking to increase your fitness levels slightly and lose a little weight is an ex army sergeant major who sends you out for a twenty mile run. The personal trainer should be flexible around your plan and not the other way around, their job is to ensure that you hit your personal goals and they should do this by motivation and by sharing their knowledge with you.
